# Russian drone strike near Kyiv kills 37 after warehouse explosions
At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone struck a warehouse west of Kyiv, triggering explosions and fires that swept into a residential area, Ukrainian officials said Saturday. The attack in Myla, a village in the Bucha district, was among the deadliest to hit Ukraine this year.
The strike occurred Friday night during several days of sustained Russian attacks around the capital. Ukrainian authorities said an unmanned aircraft hit the warehouse, although they did not specify the model. The resulting fire damaged at least 50 residential buildings and forced the evacuation of more than 370 people, according to regional officials.
Local media cited Kyiv regional military administration head Tymur Tkachenko as saying that 34 of those killed lived in a nearby care home for elderly and disabled people. Officials continued to assess the destruction, meaning casualty and damage figures could still change.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the warehouse explosion appeared to expose serious negligence over the storage of explosives near homes. Ukrainian law prohibits ammunition storage close to residential areas, and authorities opened criminal proceedings to determine who was responsible for conditions at the site. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi compared the disaster with a July strike on an ammunition depot in Vyshneve that killed 22 people and caused damaging secondary detonations.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the target was a warehouse holding components and launch boosters for long-range Ukrainian drones. Moscow also said its forces attacked other ports and logistics facilities. Those claims were not independently confirmed in the immediate reporting. Ukraine has not publicly detailed exactly what was stored at the Myla building.
The warehouse disaster occurred as Russia intensified drone attacks on Kyiv and other regions. Ukrainian officials say Moscow is using large waves of weapons to pressure air defenses and has increasingly deployed jet-powered drones. Separate Russian attacks in the southern Kherson region killed two people and wounded 27 others on Saturday, according to the regional administration.
Ukraine has also expanded long-range drone operations against Russian military industries and energy infrastructure. Kyiv says those attacks aim to reduce Moscow's ability to finance and supply the war. Russian officials reported intercepting hundreds of Ukrainian drones overnight and said people were wounded in the Rostov region.
The Myla investigation now has two distinct questions: responsibility for the Russian attack and responsibility for any unsafe storage that magnified its consequences. Ukrainian leaders have promised accountability, but determining the contents of the warehouse and whether regulations were breached will require evidence from investigators.
