Ukraine's Security Service said it struck two military airfields and destroyed missile systems in Russian-occupied Crimea, part of a broader series of Ukrainian attacks on military, communications and energy infrastructure far behind the front line. The initial reporting did not independently verify the agency's claims.
Details about the two airfields and the specific air-defence equipment were limited in the initial account. The announcement nevertheless came during an intensified Ukrainian campaign against Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. The peninsula hosts naval bases and serves as an important route for supplying Russian forces in Ukraine.
Other overnight attacks caused power outages in Sevastopol, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city's Moscow-installed governor. Ukraine has sought to disrupt military supply routes and electrical systems on the peninsula, including during the summer tourism season. Western analysts cited by the Associated Press said Kyiv also hoped the campaign would increase pressure within Russia for an end to the war.
The Crimea operations formed one part of a wider night of attacks. Ukraine's General Staff said its forces hit the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant in the southern Urals, more than 1,200 kilometres from the front, and set the complex on fire. It described the site as a major producer of helium and ethane, substances with industrial and military applications.
The General Staff also reported strikes on two satellite communications centres used by Russia's military: the Dubna centre near Moscow and another facility in the Vladimir region. Russian officials did not immediately comment on those claims, and the General Staff did not specify whether drones or missiles were used.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces shot down 323 Ukrainian drones overnight. Regional officials reported that Ukrainian drone attacks killed two people and wounded two in Nizhny Novgorod, while another person died in the Belgorod border region.
Russia, in turn, launched 101 long-range attack drones at Ukraine, according to Ukraine's air force. Ukrainian regional officials said Russian attacks killed a woman in Balakliia and a streetcar driver near Sumy. The death toll from a Russian ballistic-missile attack on Kryvyi Rih the previous day rose to four.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had moved some air-defence assets from its regions towards Moscow and the Kerch Bridge, the link between Crimea and the Russian mainland. That was a Ukrainian assessment and was not independently confirmed.
Together, the reported operations illustrated an expanding exchange of long-range attacks. For the airfields and missile systems in Crimea, however, the initial record remained a Ukrainian service announcement without independently established damage figures. Zelenskyy also said Ukraine had recently destroyed more than 60,000 tonnes of Russian ammunition at a Baltic Fleet arsenal near St Petersburg, another claim attributed to Kyiv in the report.
