A meteor broke apart over the northeastern United States on May 30, producing a sonic boom heard across Massachusetts and into Rhode Island. Residents reported a sudden bang, shaking buildings and rattling windows, while numerous observers submitted fireball sightings from around the region. No impact injuries were reported.
NASA's later analysis placed the event at about 2:11 p.m. Eastern time and described an object roughly five feet wide weighing an estimated 5.6 metric tons. The agency said it entered the atmosphere at about 42,000 miles per hour, travelled 26 miles from northwest to southeast and fragmented 31 miles above Earth.
That reconstruction indicated meteorites fell into Cape Cod Bay, where the water is about 34 metres deep. Pieces would consequently be difficult to recover. Video, eyewitness reports and satellite measurements can still help researchers calculate the brightness, speed, direction and duration of a fireball when physical fragments cannot be collected.
Preliminary accounts differed from NASA's later estimate. Another report cited an object closer to three feet wide, moving at 75,000 miles per hour and breaking apart at an altitude of 40 miles around 2:06 p.m. It also gave an energy release near 300 tons of TNT, while the updated NASA figure reported by CBS was about 230 tons.
Those differences reflected successive reconstructions rather than separate events. This report uses the more detailed later NASA figures while noting the earlier estimate. Both accounts agreed that the phenomenon was a natural meteor, not a satellite or other re-entering human-made object, and that its breakup generated the booms.
A fast-moving meteor compresses air and creates pressure waves similar to those made by a supersonic aircraft. Fragmentation can add to the sound. Unlike an earthquake, which starts at a point underground, a sonic boom is generated along an atmospheric path, so reports can arrive from a broad line across several communities.
NOAA lightning-satellite data showed a signal consistent with a meteor at about the time of the reports. Calls to a Boston television newsroom came from the city area, Ipswich and as far away as Johnston, Rhode Island. Witness descriptions and the instrumental signal helped separate the event from an explosion on the ground.
Most small meteors burn up high in the atmosphere, and most surviving pieces fall into oceans because water covers much of Earth. The Massachusetts event was unusual mainly for its size, daylight visibility and widely felt shock wave, not because it represented an ongoing impact threat.
A meteor becomes visible as atmospheric heating creates a bright streak; fragments that survive to the surface are meteorites. In this case, researchers inferred that some material reached the bay. Recovery was unlikely, but the trajectory still provided useful information about the object and its atmospheric breakup.
