At least 16 people died after a pickup carrying agricultural labourers overturned and collided with an SUV in Dhar district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. An initial police account reported 12 deaths at the scene and 23 injured people, while a subsequent official update raised the death toll to 16.
The crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. near a petrol station at Chikaliya Phata on the Indore–Ahmedabad National Highway. Police said the pickup was transporting labourers who were returning from work in an onion field. The initial report placed 35 people in the vehicle, although later accounts of the casualty total did not provide a revised passenger count.
Dhar Superintendent of Police Mayank Awasthi said preliminary information indicated that the pickup was travelling at high speed when its driver lost control. The vehicle rolled several times, moved across to the opposite side of the highway and struck a Scorpio SUV. The sequence left the pickup badly damaged and created a large emergency response at the site.
Ten people described as critically injured were transferred to MY Hospital in Indore, according to the initial account. Eleven other injured people were being treated at Dhar district hospital, and health authorities placed hospitals on alert to receive patients. The later rise in the death toll underscored that the consequences were still being assessed after the first response.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and announced payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The plan provided 200,000 rupees to the family of each person killed and 50,000 rupees for each injured person.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed senior administrative and police officials from the Indore division to go to Dhar and oversee medical arrangements. He said treatment for injured people would be free. The state government also announced 400,000 rupees for each bereaved family, 100,000 rupees for each critically injured person and 50,000 rupees for other injured people.
Authorities had not announced a final cause beyond the preliminary police assessment. The evidence supplied for the incident also did not establish the final breakdown of victims by age or gender. Officials focused their immediate response on hospital treatment, support for families and management of the crash scene as the updated toll reached 16. The incident brought together district responders in Dhar and specialist hospital capacity in Indore. With several patients initially categorised as critical, the operation extended beyond roadside recovery to transfers between facilities and coordinated medical care.
