Fourteen passengers were killed and 27 others injured when a private bus collided with a tipper-truck in Andhra Pradesh, triggering a fire that police said quickly gutted both vehicles. Hindustan Times reports that the crash happened around 6 a.m. near a quarry stretch close to Rayavaram village, where the bus was negotiating a turn near the quarry road.
The police account suggests a sudden loss of control on both sides. Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju said preliminary investigation indicated the bus steering got stuck, causing the driver to lose control and move into the opposite lane, where the oncoming tipper truck also lost control and collided with it. The impact then blew up the bus fuel tank, and the fire spread fast enough to destroy the vehicles almost completely.
The bus belonged to Harikrishna Travels and was travelling from Jagtial in Telangana to Kaligiri in Nellore district. According to the report, one driver and the cleaner survived with injuries, while many of the passengers seated in the rear portion of the bus had little chance to escape once the fire took hold. Some survivors managed to break windows and get out, but the rescue operation was initially hampered by the intensity of the flames.
