Mexico’s National Seismological Service located the epicentre 14 kilometres southwest of San Marcos. The main shock occurred at 7:58 a.m., and the US Geological Survey said it struck shortly before 8 a.m. near Acapulco. In San Marcos, a woman in her 50s died when her house collapsed. Local mayor Misael Lorenzo Castillo estimated the destruction at roughly 50 houses and said cracking was visible across the community’s housing.
The second death occurred in Mexico City. Local authorities said a 60-year-old man fell while leaving his second-floor apartment. Mayor Clara Brugada reported 12 injuries. President Claudia Sheinbaum also evacuated the presidential palace during her regular morning news conference, demonstrating how the warning reached the centre of government even though the most visible damage was in Guerrero.
By 10 p.m., the National Seismological Service had counted 1,071 aftershocks from the main earthquake, the largest with a magnitude of 4.7. Another magnitude 4.5 movement was registered near San Marcos at 10:42 p.m. Authorities deployed more than 1,000 personnel across Guerrero, Oaxaca, the State of Mexico and Mexico City to assist residents and inspect damage.
A later official assessment cited 144 Guerrero homes with light or moderate damage. That figure described a broader category than the mayor’s estimate of roughly 50 destroyed houses, so the two counts should not be treated as contradictory. Health facilities and infrastructure were being checked, with reported impacts at medical units characterized as minor or non-structural and not threatening operations. The Federal Electricity Commission said power service had been fully restored, while naval brigades and a helicopter supported work in the affected area.
The quake also activated alerts in Acapulco, where hotel guests went outdoors, and across Mexico City. The capital’s former lakebed amplifies seismic waves, increasing its vulnerability to earthquakes originating along the Pacific side of the country. Mexico lies at the meeting area of five tectonic plates and experiences frequent seismic activity. Damage assessments continued.
Officials continued structural reviews while urging residents to rely on official information and remain prepared for further aftershocks. The event’s confirmed toll on the date was two deaths and 12 reported injuries, alongside concentrated damage near San Marcos and a lengthy aftershock sequence that continued into the night.
