Known locally as Pepito, Man-yi struck Catanduanes at 9:40 p.m. local time on Saturday. The Philippine weather service reported maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometres per hour at that stage. The storm then made a second landfall in Aurora province on Sunday afternoon and moved across Luzon, with reported gusts reaching 305 kilometres per hour.

Authorities ordered more than one million people to evacuate after warnings were issued, and civil-defence officials said more than 500,000 people complied before the storm’s arrival. Flights were cancelled, while residents in flood- and landslide-prone communities sought shelter. Officials warned that ground weakened by earlier storms increased the danger of further slope failures.

Man-yi uprooted trees, damaged buildings, tore down power lines and generated coastal flooding. In Catanduanes, homes made from lighter materials were flattened and some concrete buildings lost roofs, doors or windows. Provincial officials warned that restoring electricity could take months. Flooding also inundated part of Ilagan in Isabela, while crews in the Aurora town of Baler began clearing debris from roads and waterways.

By Monday, when Man-yi had weakened to a severe tropical storm and moved away, at least eight deaths had been reported. Seven people died and three were injured in a rain-triggered landslide in Nueva Ecija, according to the provincial disaster agency. In Camarines Norte, an older man was killed after his motorcycle became entangled with a power line.

President Ferdinand Marcos said the outcome was not as severe as authorities had feared. Early evacuation and lower-than-expected rainfall reduced the damage, according to the supplied reporting, although the storm still left significant destruction along its path.

The typhoon was the sixth major storm to affect the Philippines in less than a month and followed Typhoon Usagi by only days. Earlier systems included Trami, Kong-rey, Yinxing and Toraji. At least 160 people had died in the five preceding storms, and the cumulative sequence had damaged crops, livestock and infrastructure.

The concentration was highly unusual. The Japan Meteorological Agency said four storms occurring during November marked a first for that month in records dating to 1951. The Philippines typically experiences about 20 storms and typhoons each year, but repeated impacts can magnify risk because soils remain saturated and communities have little time to repair homes, restore electricity or replenish emergency supplies before the next system arrives. Recovery therefore began while residents and emergency agencies were still managing the accumulated damage of an exceptionally compressed storm sequence.
